ABOUT

"Excellent temperament"

"Fit for purpose"

"Beautiful conformation"

Skyra Wolfhounds is a small hobby kennel, in rural Lincolnshire where we keep borzoi or Russian wolfhounds as they are sometimes called.

We believe that the breed should maintain its ability to be fit for the original purpose for which it was intended and we therefore place a great emphasis on allowing our dogs to run free and hunt, take them lure coursing, racing, as well as attending dog shows with them.

Although we show infrequently now, we have had great success in the show ring, including Best In Show, Best in Group and numerous Group placements, plus Best of Breed.  Our puppies have also taken Best Puppy in Show at a number of shows, including the Borzoi Club UK Championship Show in 2005 and 2007, by mother and daughter. In 2012 the grandson and son of these two ladies followed the same path by winning Best Puppy in Show at the Northern Borzoi Association Championship Show 2012.  He was also shortlisted to the final 3 for the Borzoi Club "Borzoi of the Year 2012".  His litter brother also qualifying for this prestigious competition.

2012 also saw a very promising youngster of ours who was exported to Estonia gaining his Junior Champion titles in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, making him a Baltic Junior Champion.

Temperament is as important to us as conformation and ability/agility.  Many of our dogs have their Good Citizen awards and in the past two of them were Pets as Therapy visiting dogs.  Our dogs are also used in professional photo shoots, where they have a natural ability to perform.

Although we have a varied lifestyle with our canine companions, it is as loving members of the family that they are most valued.  We enjoy nothing more than a walk on the beach or through the countryside with the dogs.

Our Dogs

We have a number of dogs in residence at SKYRA although the majority are now veterans and retired from the show ring, we do have a couple of youngsters as well.

The word "BORZOI" is an old Russian word which means "swift" or "fast"
